   Chill the coupe thoroughly, confirm that no garnish is required, and ready the mixing equipment.

   Measure rye whiskey, aromatic bitters, lemon juice accurately and add them to a clean mixing glass.

   Fill the mixing glass with solid ice cubes and place a bar spoon against the inside wall.

   Pre-chill a coupe. Combine the rye whiskey, one restrained dash of aromatic bitters, and accurately measured half-teaspoon of fresh lemon juice in a mixing glass with solid ice. Stir steadily for 20–25 seconds until very cold and diluted, fine-strain into the coupe, and serve without garnish.

   Strain into the chilled coupe, keeping the finished drink clear of ice fragments.

   Serve immediately without a garnish while the drink is at its best.
