   Chill a small Nick & Nora or compact coupe thoroughly and cut one short, narrow lemon twist with minimal white pith.

   Measure the London dry gin, chilled water, rich syrup, and aromatic bitters into a mixing glass.

   Fill the mixing glass with solid ice and stir smoothly for 20–25 seconds until very cold and properly diluted.

   Strain into the chilled stemmed glass, leaving all mixing ice behind.

   Express the lemon oils over the surface and secure the compact twist neatly at the rim.

   Check that the bowl, stem, and foot are spotless, then serve immediately while cold.
